One of the main goals of the Observatory is to give everyone the opportunity to observe the night sky with a telescope.
In-class observations
Guided telescope observations take place as a part of PHYS 1510: Introductory Astronomy.
Advanced observational techniques are introduced in PHYS 2510: Galaxies and Cosmology and PHYS 3030: Methods of Observational Astrophysics.
Telescope Assistants
For nighttime observations as well as regular operations, I rely on the support of dedicated student telescope assistants. If you’re interested in becoming a telescope assistant the general requirements are:
- Completed PHYS 1510: Introductory Astronomy
- Nighttime availability: scheduling of nighttime observing depends on the weather; general set-up and clean-up times are around 6-10pm
- Standing and Lifting: Telescope Operations require standing for extended periods, as well as lifting the Pentafleet telescopes (60 lbs) onto piers.
Please contact me if you’re interested in becoming a telescope assistant.
