Summer Research Opportunities for Bowdoin students
I generally offer 1-3 (paid) summer research opportunities to students every year. These are small research projects that are completed during an 8-week on campus stay. The Physics and Astronomy department holds a “Summer Research Information Session” (usually around the end of October).
Requirements:
- (Prospective) Physics Major
- Interest in Astrophysics
- Submission of research interest statement by the end of the fall semester
Preferred:
- Completed PHYS 1510: Introductory Astronomy
- Students who have completed one of my courses
Research Interest Statement
Students interested in participating in summer research with me are asked to submit a brief statement of research interests by the end of the fall semester preceding the summer program. Final selection will take place in January. Please note that requirements for summer research at Bowdoin may vary, i.e., my colleagues may have different deadlines or requirements.
Independent Studies and Honors Projects
Many summer projects lend themselves to a prolonged research project with a goal of publishing findings. This can be done as an Intermediate or Advanced Independent Studies Project or as an Honors Project (during senior year). For graduating with honors, the department has additional requirements.
Letters of Recommendations
If you are considering a Research Experience (REU) through an external program and require a letter of recommendation, please ensure that you communicate with me early, both about your plans and the deadlines/requirements of the relevant programs. Please note that deadline vary widely among all of the national and international opportunities.
